Files - to protect certain files from being overwritten - (a favorite template etc..).  While on the Desktop, open the Get Info dialog box and lock the file.  (Click on the box marked locked).  You will be able to open the file and if you want to save your changes you must use the Save As command.  This way your original file will remain intact.
